# A record

The DNS entry that points a hostname at an IP address. One A record is what puts files on a subdomain of your own domain.

DNS is the phone book of the internet, and an A record is one entry in it: this name answers at this address. Adding an A record for a subdomain such as ai.yourdomain.com is how content hosted elsewhere is served under your own name, which matters because signals and trust attach to domains. Changes take minutes to an hour to spread, and a proxy sitting in front of the record (Cloudflare's orange cloud, for example) can quietly change what is actually served.
